How To Get Awesome Curls

Andie MacDowell has fabulous curls. I think the silvers are photo-shopped on, but they look great. Source.

I didn't like my curly hair until I was in my 40's - you kids reading this, don't be like me. If you're blessed with texture-full hair, embrace it. My own love for curls was a long journey, with some outside help. Reading the book Curly Girl and the site Naturally Curly inspired me to style and care for my fine, fuzzy hair.

And a trip to Nick Arrojo's salon in Manhattan was on my bucket list for hair. You might remember Nick from earlier seasons of What Not To Wear. He's the one who made magic with the guests' hair.

I didn't get to meet Nick at my appointment but I had a lovely young stylist, Olga, who has her own gorgeous curls. I asked Olga to style my curls simply, to give them body and definition, and not to straighten them.

Here's what I learned at my dream salon:
  • You're going to need some product. Olga used a thickening mousse mixed with a styling cream, a big glob of it. She worked it all the way through my damp hair.
  • Let your head fall to the side as you dry with a diffuser. This "sets" your roots with body as they dry away from your scalp. And ABS: Always Be Scrunching. Toss your hair around to loosen the curls.
  • Olga then used a dry shampoo on my dried hair. This product gives wonderful body if you spray it at the roots.
  • Finish with a dab of shine serum, concentrating it on the ends of your hair. Not too much, as it can weigh down fine hair.
  • Don't crush your curls while you sleep. Wear them in a loose bun or scrunchie, then mist with a little water in the morning to revive them.

If you're thinking about going to Arrojo's ask for Olga, and don't be afraid of the prices: my curly shampoo and blow-out was only $45.

It's in Soho, about a ten minute walk from the apartment we were renting.

Here's Olga, my amazing curl-maker. She's got fabulous curls.

Don't laugh (OK laugh) - Helena of Orphan Black is one of my hair idols. Don't mind the
red eyes, it's part of her odd persona.

Stay fabulous and love your hair,
