A weekend at Pennyhill Park, Surrey with Tempur Mattresses

I’ve just spent a heavenly weekend at Pennyhill Park in Surrey, a pretty damn swanky spa hotel. I’ve stayed in lots of hotels during my life, and every now and then I stay in a reeeeally nice one and think ‘Gosh, it’s a shame that I have all these things planned to do while I’m here, because I really just want to hang out in my nice hotel all weekend.’ So this time, that’s exactly what we did.
It helped that Pennyhill Park is the kind of hotel that you do that in. It’s not a base to explore, it’s a destination in its own right. There are two restaurants (one of which has two Michelin stars), an indoor and an outdoor pool, a massive spa, multiple jacuzzis, a golf course and amazing accommodation, too. I got pretty excited by their website, which said they were proud of their bathrooms, and after enjoying a five-jet shower while Matt soaked in the rolltop bath, they darn well should be proud. God, if only all bathrooms were like that – it was bigger than my living room!
We headed over on Saturday afternoon and started off with a massage each before exploring the spa for the rest of the day. The massages were perfect. They lasted an hour, my DSLR-shoulder was totally sorted out and we came out feeling all happy and calm and drunk, without actually being drunk. So obviously next we went for prosecco in the jacuzzi, to rectify that. Yep, this place will bring your drinks to you in a jacuzzi. THE DREAM.
After an afternoon bouncing from steam room to ice room to steam room to foot spa to jacuzzi and back again, we headed off to our room to chill for a bit and fall in love with the amazing bathroom. I want that bathroom. Then dinner - I was disappointed that we couldn't get into The Latymer, their Michelin-starred restaurant (it was full), but their second restaurant, The Brasserie is really good. After a couple of cocktails (HELLO, raspberry & champagne mojito), we dug into our main courses, which handily I have a written record of because my sister told me to text her everything we ate. That's normal, right? To start, rabbit terrine for me and duck liver parfait for Matt. YUM. Then fillet steak and chips for Matt, but I won Food Wars with my ox cheek with truffled potatoes. Argh. So good. The meat was so tender I could pull it apart with my fork, no knife required. For pudding I had a pistachio souffle (nom) and Matt had a coffee and chocolate supreme, which was just kind of selfish as I don't like coffee so I couldn't try any. There are rules, right?
I don't know about you but lots of food makes me sleepy, so it was back to the room for the whole purpose of our trip. No, not THAT. Sleeping! We'd been invited to try out the king size memory foam mattress by Tempur, so I’d been looking forward to going to bed all day, and I wasn’t disappointed. It was so comfortable – I’m used to sleeping on a memory foam mattress, but the Tempur cloud mattress is on another level. The idea of sleeping on a cloud isn’t actually that appealing to me – I don’t find overly soft mattresses very supportive – but this mattress was the perfect combination of soft and firm, and incredibly supportive on my ageing back and hips! I didn’t want to leave our four poster the next morning – can you blame me? I wish I was back in that comfy bed right now.
Luckily, our breakfast arrived (room service breakfast ftw) so I had something lovely to wake up to – freshly made pastries and a huge English breakfast – before we checked out. One thing I loved about Pennyhill Park is that although you have to leave your rooms by 11am, you can use the spa until 2pm – it was full of people making the most of it before heading back to reality! I think I need an ice room in my house, it was the perfect remedy for my cocktails-and-wine head.
It was the most dreamy weekend ever, and as we headed off to work in the rain on Monday, I really felt like I’d been away for a week, not just a weekend. And now we need more spa weekends in our life – we’ve already started researching day rates for places in the local area. You see, this was Matt’s first ever spa weekend, and now he’s got a taste for the good life – I think we may have to start playing the lottery so we can become happy millionaires who spend our lives in spas. #lifegoals
Pennyhill Park is at London Road, Bagshot, Surrey, GU19 5EU. Tempur paid for our weekend in exchange for this honest review.
