Oktoberfest 2013 Party Ideas

Oktoberfest officially starts on September 21st, which happens to be tomorrow! If you’re a last minute planner still putting together an Oktoberfest party this year, we've got some great tips to make your celebration successful. Read on and be sure to take notes!

Oktoberfest Beers

We’re going to read your mind and just jump right into drinks. Probably the biggest reason (if not the only reason) we are so obsessed with this holiday has to be the fact that it’s an excuse to indulge in our favorite Belgian beers. So if you’re hosting an Oktoberfest party, you’ll want to make sure that you stock up on an awesome selection! Whether you’re looking for imported German or Bavarian brews or want to sample seasonal beers from local breweries, Oktoberfest is a great time to serve up interesting varieties. Here are a few of our recommendations:

  • Spaten Oktoberfest

  • Paulaner Hefe-Weizen

  • Franziskaner Hefe-Weissbier

  • Delirium Tremens

  • Chimay White Ale

  • Blue Moon Belgian White Ale

  • Samuel Adams Oktoberfest

Also, if you can swing a keg for your Oktoberfest party, do it! The more beer, the better! And while you’re at it, invite your guests to bring an interesting beer to share. After all, variety is the spice of life!

Oktoberfest Music and Decorations

When you’re hosting an Oktoberfest party, it is important to set the scene. People travel to Munich from all over the world to experience Oktoberfest in all its glory. Don’t disappoint your guests by throwing an Oktoberfest party that doesn't look or feel like an Oktoberfest party! Since Oktoberfest is a celebration of German and Bavarian culture, you can decorate your space with colors from the German and/or Bavarian flags. As far as music goes, it’s all about polka! Oom-pah bands are a tradition at every Oktoberfest celebration and although it may not be easy to come by one for your party, you can always tap into online resources to stream some great German music! One quick and easy way to entertain guests with the sounds of Munich is to find the Oktoberfest station on Pandora and play it over speakers. You’ll have everyone doing the chicken dance in no time!

Oktoberfest Food

When you’re consuming massive amounts of alcohol, it’s always a great idea to have some food around to soak up all the liquor. Here are a few quick and easy German style foods to serve at your party:

  • Bratwurst and Sauerkraut

  • German Style Potato Salad

  • Roasted Chicken

  • Soft Pretzels

  • Black Forest Cake

  • Apple Struedel

Oktoberfest Games

Basically, just think drinking games. If you've ever seen the movie Beerfest, then you probably already know a ton of great drinking games to play at your own Oktoberfest party. Beer Pong, Quarters and King’s Cup are always a lot of fun. Don’t know all the rules to King’s Cup? There’s an app for it that you can download on your phone. Other regular party games which you can play with drinking consequences include Jenga, Headbandz, and Apples to Apples (or if you prefer the crazier version of that game, we suggest Cards Against Humanity). You can also set up obstacle course style games like a keg roll race or a stein race to get a bigger group to participate. Set up stations for guests to play at to keep everyone involved all afternoon long!

Oktoberfest Costumes

What’s the one thing that will make your party complete? Oktoberfest costumes! Dressing up in traditional German attire is a huge part of Oktoberfest. For guys, it’s lederhosen. For the ladies, a dirndl is a must. Guests dressed in their best German costumes will put the finishing touch on your Oktoberfest party!

Once you've got all these things down, you’ll be ready to party hard! Now all you have to do is sit back, eat, drink, and enjoy the company of fine friends.
